For the second time in two weeks, Mike Duncan gathered elite basketball players to a remote location in Eastern Ohio for very competitive basketball. The second annual Adidas Midwest Elite Camp switched locations this year from Columbus to the Eastern Ohio Basketball Resort, a camp ground-type setting in the foothills northeastern Ohio. The campsite, which is owned and operated by the legendary Huggins family, offers a unique setting for a basketball camp in that, the camp is located in a remote area of Ohio and a majority of the courts are located outside. In addition to the many courts scattered around the property, there is plenty of dorm room space for overnight campers.
This year Mike Duncan’s Adidas Midwest Elite Camp expanded to include two sessions; the first of which was the junior high school session which included 5th, 6th and 7th graders, and the high school session which included rising 9th, 10th , 11th and 12th grades. In both sessions, Mike Duncan brought in Chaz Wolf to serve as camp director.
As was the case last year with the inaugural camp, the Adidas Midwest Elite Camp attracted many elite players from several areas of the country including North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Tennessee, Indiana, Virginia, Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, Florida, Missouri and Canada.
In terms of the format, the camp was divided into two divisions, the ACC for 9th and 10th graders, and the Big Ten for 11th and 12th graders. Each division consisted of seven teams of about 8-10 player each. In each of the 3 days of the camp players participated in a full day of events, which consisted of skill sessions, demonstrations, contests and games.
Day three of the camp included a slam-dunk contest and All-America games in each of the four divisions. In the slam-dunk contest big John Brown from Cincinnati put a serious display of power with his dunks. By most accounts, Brown was the contest winner, followed closely by 6’6 Djmanoum Bandoumel from Canada.
Clearly the top big man at the camp was 6’11C Kenny Frease from Massillon, Ohio. Frease proved why he is one of the top 2008 prospects in the country with his stellar play at the camp. The number two big man at the camp was 6’6 John Brown from Cincinnati, Ohio. Brown is extremely athletic and is a force around the bucket. Not only did he try and block every shot that was even close to the cup, he was a dunking machine who used more power than finesse. In my opinion, the top guard at the camp was 6’3 Chris Wyse from Ohio who was very athletic and strong to the bucket. Wyse was primarily a slasher who could put up gaudy numbers any time he wanted to. I have to mention “C Smooth,” AKA Courtney Stanley, a 6’1 PG from Philly. Smooth is an understatement. This kid was one of the most polished kids at the camp.

Although some parents and players may frown on playing outside, I think the outdoor setting of this camp was fantastic, and I think the kids really enjoyed the experience. Also, the fact that the camp was held in such a remote location where cell phone service was very limited and there were no televisions or radios anywhere to be found contributed to the uniqueness and overall atmosphere of the camp.
